Souk Ispan, Tajoura, Libya

Souk Ispan is located in Tajoura a short drive from Tripoli, Libya. The site is 5 Hectares and is the location of a historical Farers Market (souk) where a Retail development was proposed that would include the Market element within the design.

The Concept is to retain the feel of a traditional Souk while incorporating contemporary Retail outlets with onsite multilevel parking wrapping the building that delivers consumers over multiple level activating upper Retail levels. The building is seen as a series of pavilions unified by a shading roof element.

The roof concept uses a folded metal plane, overlaid with a pattern of transparent openings. The steel structure for the folded plane will bear down on the concrete, stone and render structures of the retail elements of the scheme.

The roof is lifted above building parapets to provide continuous clear-storey along it’s edges, providing natural ventilation to the mall areas, and forming part of the fire strategy by helping with smoke ventilation. This proposal provides solar shading for hot summer days and protection from infrequent rain showers, while at the same time allowing daylight to permeate the shopping mall areas below.

Retail Area 44,000m2 Retail. 35,000m2 Car Parking.
